First, I
hope everyone understands about us not having the second memorial service
right away. We were pretty much exhausted emotionally and physically from
our week in Tucson and the drive back. I've been talking to my Mom, Marcia
and Dennis about plans for the service in Danville, Il.
My Dad
always told me that death should be a time for celebration. He thought of
death as the final healing for the Mind, Body and Spirit. Not as something
to be feared or saddened by.
Although
I miss him dearly and still can not believe that I can't pick up the phone
and call him, I find it comforting to remember how he felt about death.
So, in
keeping with the idea of celebration we are trying to schedule the service
as close to his birthday as possible. (Aug. 21) We are trying for Aug.
24th mid afternoon in Danville. Hopefully, we will have a firm date next
week some time.
I have
sent pictures of the service we had for my Dad in Tucson. He had wanted
his ashes scattered in the desert. We invited his friends to come and
share their thoughts about him. From what they said, I think my Dad had
great impact on the people he knew in Tucson. Many spoke of how he helped
them to reach beyond what they thought was possible for them. I can't
think of higher praise.
My Dad
had this quote from Bishop John C. Spong on the wall of his office.
"Ultimately, the role of the Christian is to build a world in which all
people might be given the strength that would enable them to live, to
love, and to be all that God created them to be. So disciples of Jesus
must finally live for others."
We will
let you all know as soon as possible when and where the memorial service
will be. Thanks to all of you for being a friend of my Dad. I know he
treasured his relationships with all of you.
