What is Bucyrus After School Enrichment?

B.A.S.E. works to enrich the body, mind and spirit of the children and families in Bucyrus, Ohio.  It currently serves students in grades one through six. Homework assistance and tutoring are key to the program, as are computer training, arts and crafts, healthy snacks, recreation, field trips, service projects, and spiritual development.

Volunteers are key to the program's success.  They assist the children with homework and other activities and get to join in on the fun.  They include individuals from the community, the supporting churches and Bucyrus High School.  Parents also assist when possible.

 

Guests are part of the children's activities at least once a week.  They include youth pastors from area churches; artists and crafters who lead the children in making their own creations; business and community leaders; officials from the police and fire departments; recreation leaders from area schools; and many more experts who share their knowledge and spirit with the children.

 

Funding for B.A.S.E. comes from our Circle of Support: generous individuals, donations from local churches and organizations, contributions from the parents, the Bucyrus Area United Way, plus grants when they are available.  A major supporter is the Bucyrus Area Community Foundation.  The program also enjoys strong support from the Bucyrus Board of Education.

 

B.A.S.E. was founded in 1998 by eight churches as an outreach ministry to Bucyrus’ children and families. Founding churches include: First Baptist, First Presbyterian, First United Methodist, Grace United Methodist, Good Hope Lutheran, St. John's United Church of Christ, St. Paul's Lutheran and the Salvation Army.

 

In January 2004, the program moved to two classrooms in the Kearsley Building on Jump Street in Bucyrus, provided by the Bucyrus Board of Education.  It previously operated out of the lower levels of Grace United Methodist Church.    

 

In Summer 2006, B.A.S.E. is moving to a new location, which is yet to be announced.
